Taliban guerrillas fought Pakistan commandos inside a naval air base with rockets and grenades in an attack the Taliban said was revenge for Osama bin Laden’s killing and ties with the U.S.
“They have captured one building, our forces are fighting them and there may be hostages inside,” Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters in Karachi, the country’s largest city and home to the base. “Al-Qaeda and Taliban are enemies of Pakistan and are trying to destroy our assets.”
The guerrillas damaged surveillance aircraft provided by the U.S. in the biggest strike against Pakistan’s military in 18 months. Army and Navy commandos were fighting between 10 and 15 militants, and “guarding assets inside the base which are all safe,” Navy spokesman Irfan Ul Haq said by phone from Islamabad. Four navy personnel and a member of the Pakistan Rangers, a paramilitary force, have been killed, Haq said.
